OPENING HYMN  “Holy Spirit, Wind of Heaven”

  1. Holy Spirit, Wind of Heaven, Bread of Life, our warmth and light,
    Power of creation, bringing hopeful dawn from darkest night:
    you have birthed us, you have borne us, you have blessed us all our days,
    now you fill our lungs with singing; how you fill our hearts with praise!
  2. Holy Spirit, flame of passion, you who brought the Church to be,
    re-create us as your Body, holy in our unity.
    Fill us with your fierce compassion, gentle courage, trust, and peace;
    lead us all to love each other, make our sad divisions cease.
  3. Holy Spirit, Dove descending, mind of Christ within us all;
    speak your wisdom, move among us, help us hear your inner call.
    Be the only pow’r that moves us; be our life, O singing Dove!
    Holy Spirit, come! Revive us! Fill us with your heart of love!

OPENING PRAYER

Come, Holy Spirit, and move over this chaotic world.
Come, Holy Spirit, and bring life to this world.
Come, Holy Spirit, and move over the chaos of our lives.
Come, Holy Spirit, and bring us new life.
The Lord be with you.
And also with you.
Let us pray…
Almighty and Holy Spirit, our Comforter, pure, living, true—illumine, govern, sanctify us, and confirm our hearts and minds in the faith and in all genuine consolation; preserve and rule over us so that, dwelling in the house of the Lord all the days of our lives, we may behold the Lord and praise him with joyful spirit, in union with all the heavenly church. Amen.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

The Lord be with you.

And also with you.

Let us pray:

Lord, open our hearts and minds by the power of your Holy Spirit, that as the Scriptures are read and your Word is proclaimed, we may hear with joy what you say to us today. Amen.

ACTS LESSON Acts 2:1-8, 12-21 CEB

PSALTER Psalm 104:24-34, 35b UMH 827

O Lord, how manifold are your works!

In wisdom you have made them all; the earth is full of your creatures.

Yonder is the sea, great and wide,

creeping things innumerable are there, living things both small and great.

There go the ships, and Leviathan that you formed to play in it.

These all look to you to give them their food in due season.

When you give to them, they gather it;

when you open your hand, they are filled with good things.

When you hide your face, they are dismayed;

when you take away their breath, they die and return to their dust.

When you send forth your spirit, they are created;

and you renew the face of the ground.

May the glory of the Lord endure forever; may the Lord rejoice in his works—

who looks on the earth and it trembles, who touches the mountains and they smoke.

I will sing to the Lord as long as I live;

I will sing praise to my God while I have being.

May my meditation be pleasing to the Lord, in whom I rejoice.

Bless the Lord, O my soul. Praise the Lord!

———   RESPONSE TO THE WORD ———

HYMN OF RESPONSE “Love Divine, All Loves Excelling”

  1. Love divine, all loves excelling, joy of heav’n, to earth come down;
    fix in us thy humble dwelling; all thy faithful mercies crown!
    Jesus, thou art all compassion, pure, unbounded love thou art;
    visit us with thy salvation; enter ev’ry trembling heart.
  2. Breathe, O breathe thy loving Spirit into ev’ry troubled breast!
    Let us all in thee inherit; let us find that second rest.
    Take away our bent to sinning; Alpha and Omega be;
    end of faith, as its beginning, set our hearts at liberty.
  3. Come, Almighty to deliver, let us all thy life receive,
    suddenly return and never, nevermore thy temples leave.
    Thee we would be always blessing, serve thee as thy hosts above,
    pray and praise thee without ceasing, glory in thy perfect love.
  4. Finish, then, thy new creation; pure and spotless let us be.
    Let us see thy great salvation perfectly restored in thee;
    changed from glory into glory, till in heav’n we take our place,
    till we cast our crowns before thee, lost in wonder, love, and praise.

 REAFFIRMATION OF BAPTISM AND CONFIRMATION CELEBRATION

RENUNCIATION OF SIN AND PROFESSION OF FAITH

Let us join together in professing the Christian faith

as contained in the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments.

Do you believe in God the Father?

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Do you believe in Jesus Christ?

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, [who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,

born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven,

is seated at the right hand of the Father, and will come again to judge the living and the dead.]

Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?

I believe in the Holy Spirit, [the holy catholic* church,  the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.]

 THANKSGIVING OVER THE WATER

REAFFIRMATION OF FAITH

THANKSGIVING

I charge you to do all in your power to increase their faith,

confirm their hope, and perfect them in love.

We give thanks for all that God has already given our confirmands and we welcome them in Christian love. As members together with them in the body of Christ and in this congregation of The United Methodist Church, we renew our covenant faithfully to participate in the ministries of the Church by our prayers, our presence, our gifts, our service, and our witness, that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ.

CLOSING SONG “Thrive” – West & Hall

Verse 1

Here in this worn and weary land where many a dream has died,

like a tree planted by the water, we never will run dry.

Pre-Chorus

So, Living Water flowing through, God, we thirst for more of You.

Fill our hearts and flood our souls with one desire:

Chorus

Just to know You and to make You known, we lift Your Name on high.

Shine like the sun, make darkness run and hide.

We know we were made for so much more than ordinary lives.

It’s time for us to more than just survive: we were made to thrive.

Verse 2

Into Your Word we’re diggin’ deep to know our Father’s heart.

Into the world we’re reaching out to show them who You are.

Bridge

Joy unspeakable, faith unsinkable, love unstoppable, anything is possible.
