Sunday School Classes at Highland
Highland has a large and diverse Sunday School program for all ages. Children and youth are divided into classes by age and grade, with exciting and engaging lessons each week. Adult classes vary by age and by content, some are lecture-style and others are more discussion-oriented. Also, Sunday School is a place to meet and get to know a smaller group of Highland folks. Read on to find out more about our different classes; visitors are always welcome in every class!

ABC Class

This class is the combination of three adult classes, each originally founded by former pastors of Highland. They use a Bible study a series called “Journey through the Bible.” With a variety of teachers who periodically come to the class to lead discussions, they explore the texts for its meaning for the people of that day, and also discuss the modern day understanding of the material. Class members include both couples and singles of diverse ages and occupations. They participate in and support many church and community activities. Adults of all ages with a spirit of discovery are welcome. The class meets in room 202, which is located on the upper level of the Education wing. For more information contact Charles Dunn at 787-8989.

The Epiphany Class consists of twenty, thirty and forty-somethings—single and married, with and without children—who enjoy learning together and lively conversation. We typically alternate doing studies on portions of scripture with studies on a wide range of topics, from church history to Methodist beliefs to contemporary pop culture. We enjoy regular times of fellowship, such as going out to lunch after church or gathering for dinner at one of our homes. We meet in room 213, tucked across the hall from the library. Contact Janet Baucom for more information.

Fellowship Class

The Fellowship Class originated at the time that Highland began in 1954, and is the only class that has been in operation for that period of time. Although there is considerable diversity in the membership of the class, many have been or are associated with NC State University. There are normally about 25 members in attendance on each Sunday, and this has remained quite constant over a number of years. The class is concerned with and active in a number of social issues and has contributed significantly to a number of mission projects such as Boys Town in Jamaica, Stop Hunger Now, Food Bank of North Carolina, Method Day Care Center, WIHN, and the Helen Wright Center. The class normally enjoys some type of social activity each month such as a luncheon, visiting a museum, or attending a play.
The class discussions exhibit considerable diversity in both structure and content. Outside speakers are frequently recruited to speak on topics such as social justice and the judicial system. Speakers representing other religions have been recruited to discuss and compare the world religions. The Discipline for the United Methodist Church has been used as the basis for some of the discussions. Lectures on video tapes have been used to supplement many of the recent class discussions. The topics of these taped lectures have included: The Old Testament Series, The New Testament Series, The Historical Jesus, The Apostle Paul, and The Theory of Evolution and Biological Anthropology. Other lectures series that are being considered for class discussions include: Great Figures of the Old Testament, Great Figures of the New Testament, The Lives of Great Christians, and Philosophy and Religion in the West.

Genesis Class

The Genesis Sunday School class is a positive, supportive group of mixed-aged adults (35-70). We include singles, divorcées, married without children, married with children, empty-nesters and retirees. Normally, we have about 20 people in attendance any given Sunday. We manage the class in quarterly teams. Each team plans and leads lessons for that quarter as well as plans a monthly Ladies Night Out dinner and generally a monthly social event for the entire class. Our studies include a variety of video studies, discussion guide based studies and at least one Bible study a year. Some mission projects that we participate in include Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network (WIHN) and the Christmas Warmth tree. Please come visit and see if we might be a good small group for you! We'd love to have you.

Men's Pathway Class

The Men's Pathway is an all male class which employs a discussion format to explore scriptural applications to a wide variety of challenges and opportunities found along the pathway of everyday Christian living. Selected Christian texts and targeted Bible passages serve as a focus in seeking a greater understanding of God's will for our lives, considering methods of sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ, determining various means of service to God and ministry to others, fulfilling God's purpose for our lives, and glorifying God in what we do and say.
Men's Pathway members are actively involved in a number of ministries including assistance with WIHN families, participation in Stephen Ministry, assistance in teaching a variety of classes for children and youth, providing sound and PowerPoint support at the Connection service, ushering at worship services, and many other activities. Group fellowships are held periodically at local restaurants and members' homes. Our long standing traditions of hugging at the beginning of every class and sitting in small, children's chairs serve to remind us of the unbreakable bonds of Christian brotherhood and the importance of remaining humble before God.

Seekers Class

Started as the "Young Adult Class" in 1974, members still claim to be the "young at heart" (but clearly more experienced) class. Participants include middle-aged to "early seniors." Lively discussions cover a wide range of topics that are Bible based and concern current issues. Responsibilities for planning lessons and activities are shared among class members. Community outreach projects are varied and vital to yearly activities. Socials include monthly dine-outs plus outings to the mountains, beach, members' homes, and local performances and sporting events. New members are always welcome as they seek to strengthen their faith through study and fellowship. For more information contact Tom Pace at 919-841-5677.

Upper Room Class

Our group (covering all ages) welcomes those interested in Bible based study with all levels of Bible study experience. Visitors and new members always are welcome at any time.We use the “Adult Bible Studies” curriculum published by Cokesbury.Weekly lessons are outlined by rotating discussion leader volunteers from within the class. We always have an open and free-wheeling discussion of the material by all class members. We emphasize outreach to class members, the needs of the church, and many forms of mission support. We regularly participate in the needs of the community, serving dinners at the Helen Wright Center, and strong support of Wake Interfaith Hospitality Network nights. Quarterly socials include potlucks. While our members generally include "more experienced" Highland persons (at 40+), our younger members include families with late teens; and our more experienced usually are still celebrating the achievements of grandchildren. We also proudly boast of the participation of one of Highland's "most experienced" members at a still very lively and alert 93+! Visitors and new members of all ages always are welcome. We meet in Room #304 of Bradley Center.
