Companions in Christ

Companions in Christ is a powerfully transforming small-group experience that builds spiritual practices within congregations. During this study, we will explore classic spiritual practices, including Bible study, journaling, and prayer that will help us develop daily patterns that open our lives to a deepening relationship with God and one another.  Pastor Heather will lead this 28-week study in the Parlor beginning on September 15, meeting each Tuesday at 7 PM.  Interested? Please sign up at the Reception Desk or e-mail Heather.

Prayer Shawl Ministry

Are you looking for a way to bless and serve others? If so, consider joining the Prayer Shawl Ministry. You don’t need to be an experienced knitter or crocheter to join. We have plenty of good teachers. Each month, there are four opportunities to meet and fellowship. Beginning in September, we will meet on 1st and 3rd Wednesday evenings at 6:45pm following Cross Training and 1st and 3rd Thursday mornings at 10am Questions? Contact Heather Lear.

Men's Fellowship & Prayer Group

The Men’s Fellowship and Prayer Group meets every Tuesday Morning at 6:30am sharp in the Conference Room of Highland. The group has a morning devotion, shares prayers and concerns and adjourns promptly at 7:30am. It includes both church members and nonmembers of various age groups. Coffee is served and all are welcome, regardless of where you are in your spiritual journey. While very informal, simply bring a Bible and an eagerness to learn more about the Bible.

Mickey Efird Studies

Dr. Mickey EfirdEach fall, Highland is pleased to host Biblical scholar, retired Duke Divinity School professor, and much-beloved teacher Dr. James "Mickey" Efird.  Dr. Efird typically offers a four week study, each year covering a different book(s) of the Bible.  Look for details beginning in September.  In addition, as a renowned teacher, Dr. Efird has helped to produce study guides and resources based on his classes for lay people, some of which are available in Highland's Mary Smith Memorial Library.

The Truth Project

In a recent study, the Barna Research Group revealed a stunning statistic that continues to reverberate throughout the evangelical world. Only 9 percent of professing Christians have a biblical worldview.

You are invited to be a part of this cultural change by participating in the 12 week study starting that began January 20th from 6-7:30pm on Wednesday evenings. Those who participate in the Wednesday night dinners are encouraged to bring your food to the conference room where the sessions will be held.

Because of this, today's believers live and think very similarly to non-believers. A personal sense of significance is rarely experienced, we spend our money and time on things that fail to satisfy and we begin to wonder what life's ultimate purpose really is. We are, in short, losing our bearings as a people and a nation.

To counter this slide within the body of Christ, we are launching one of the most powerful studies in the History of our Church—The Truth Project. It has transformed many churches and individuals since it was produced a few years ago.

The Truth Project is a DVD-based small group curriculum comprised of 12 one-hour lessons taught by Dr. Del Tackett. This study is the starting point for looking at life from a biblical perspective. Each lesson discusses in great detail the relevance and importance of living the Christian worldview in daily life.

Mike and Connie Williams and Neal Coker will lead this important series which will involve reviewing a DVD and discussion that will follow.

Monday Morning Women's Bible Study

All women of the church are invited to join Heather Lear for a study on Monday mornings at 9:30am. We will spend the first part of the semester working with a curriculum titled, Living the Good Life Together. This particular study is titled, Hospitality: Risking Welcome. It is a Bible and video based study that will help us understand why hospitality is basic to our lives as Christians. After six weeks of study, we will develop an action plan to apply what we’ve learned in a concrete way within the life of Highland. For the final few weeks of the semester, we will work through Richard Foster’s Celebration of Discipline.
Our intro session will be at 9:30am on Monday, January 25. Childcare will be provided. Please let Heather know if you need care ahead of time, though, so Anita can plan accordingly.
