Highlanders Senior Adult Ministry

Highlander ladies

The overall purpose of the senior adult ministry is to provide an ongoing, effective senior adult program, ministering to the specific needs of senior adults, and to promote outreach opportunities. This program for thesenior adults (the Highlanders) includes luncheons, day trips, and overnight trips that provide entertainment, are educational, and (more importantly) enhance Christian fellowship. The luncheon meetings are usually catered by our HUMC Food Service Director, Patti Colvin, and include a speaker on a topic that is both stimulating and educational. Occasionally, the luncheons include some type of musical entertainment such as the Cardinal Singers. Day trips have included the Yates Mill Pond Heritage Tour and a visit to Charlotte to view the Dead Sea Scrolls. Trips are being planned to visit the North Carolina Zoo and the Billy Graham Museum.

Friendship & Fellowship Team

The Friendship & Fellowship Team develops, coordinates and hosts church receptions, special event luncheons/banquets and other social events in order to recognize achievements, special occasions and enable our congregation to better get to know one another. We hope to create entertaining, welcoming venues to provide our large congregation with opportunities to cultivate closer relationships with each other.

Our currently sponsored events include: Valentine’s Day Banquet, Easter Luncheon, New Member Quarterly Social, Confirmation Luncheon, Summer Cookout, Annual Kitchen Training.

Volunteering Opportunities

Meals on Wheels Volunteers & Substitutes Needed

There are 10 of us who deliver meals the 2nd Wed. of each month. At least once every other month and sometimes each month, substitutes are needed.  This is an important mission project of our church and is extremely important to the disabled and elderly persons who depend upon us for their daily meals on our assigned days.
What is involved?
On our assigned days, we volunteers meet around 11 am at the Meals on Wheels Facility on Blair Drive on the Dorothea Dix Campus. Most of us do this with a partner; one person to drive; the other to deliver the meal to the home. It takes approximately an hour, but ONLY ONE TIME PER MONTH! It is a very easy process. You arrive at the facility, pick up your list , sign off on a clipboard, pick up your meals which are in coolers, and then deliver them. We take the empty coolers back to the facility when we are finished. Many of us now have our own coolers..........so when we get there ,we just transfer the meals to our coolers........and we don't even have to return to the facility. It's a "piece of cake"; Please call Rosalind Thompson for more details or to volunteer 510-4215.

Donation Requests
You may drop off any coat donations and gently used blankets in the box by the Lake Boone entrance or the drop box between Bradley Hall and the Childen's Center. Donations will go to the Raleigh Rescure Mission.

We have an international family that is in need of several items.
Table lamps, Microwave, Computer, Keyboard, Monitor, Coffee Table, Kitchen Table, Adult and child beds, Dressers

If you have any of these items that you would like to donate please contact Tom Lamb at 787.4240 x107.

Prayer Ministry:
Are you interested in praying for our Worship services on Sunday mornings? We would like to have Prayer Warriors to commit to prayer in the Prayer Room on Sunday mornings during the 8:30am or 11:00am worship hours. Our goal is to have enough warriors for prayer so you would only be out of worship once every six weeks. If you would like more information, please contact Rebecca Turner by e-mail  or phone (544-4565) or Ann Chapman by e-mail
