Safe Sanctuary Trainings
Trainings and review sessions are coming up for everyone who works with children and youth in any capacity at Highland.

Safe Sanctuaries is our church’s effort to make sure that children and youth are safe while at the church or participating in church events. Safe Sanctuary Training will be offered on Sunday, March 4 at 9:50 in the parlor. While, Safe Sanctuary training is required of persons working with children and youth, our hope is that the entire congregation will participate in the training. It takes all of us working together to make our church a place that is safe, welcoming, and nurturing for our children and youth. If you have questions about Safe Sanctuary training, or if you would like to schedule a different time, please contact Amy Takahashi (787-4240 or by e-mail).

EXAMPLE of Training Subjects:

What to do in an Emergency?

One of the items covered in the training is what to do in the event of a fire. During a recent training session the question came up as to a meeting place outside the building if the building had to be evacuated due to a fire. If the fire alarm sounds during church events everyone should evacuate the building and gather in the area near the garden. (This will be a safe distance from the building and out of the way of emergency personnel.) Parents should not go to their children’s classrooms. The teachers and care providers will make sure the children in their care do safely exit the building. While we certainly hope and pray that we never need to use our emergency plan, having one can give all of us some peace of mind.
